Coliform Bacteria Self Test

Description

Although the majority of tests should be performed by the lab for maximum accuracy, this coliform bacteria self test can be reliable to perform at home. It has a high specificity, so if the test is negative, you can be reasonably confident that the water is free from coliform bacteria. However, if positive, we would recommend further lab testing to be performed.

This coliform bacteria self-test is also designed to be used together with a water testing package, as this way it gives us more information on the purity of the water.

The test itself is manufactured in the USA and licensed by the United States Environment Protection Agency (EPA) for use at home for tap drinking water.

How does it work?

1. Remove the cap and fill it with the water you want to get tested, to the indicated line on the container.
2. Give it a good shake, then let it sit for 48 hours at room temperature: 23-25 degrees celsius.
3. If the colour changes from purple to yellow, this indicates the presence of coliform bacteria and in this case, we would recommend further lab testing.

The UKAS-certified lab criteria for bacteria testing in drinking water are significantly more strict. You have to use the special containers supplied by us and the sample also has to be processed on the same day of collection.
